Australian Hotels Association (AHA) ACT Branch supports the government’s decision to abandon proposed changes to current liquor licence fees and trading hour legislation.

ACT Government will proceed with a range of reforms to the Liquor Act later this year, but they will not include changes to opening hours. The proposal to have a changed fee structure for the small number of venues that stay open past 3am will also not progress.

AHA ACT Branch general manager Jo Broad said “Whilst we support many of the proposals outlined in the Building on Liquor Reform White Paper, penalising a small number of venues through increased licence fees and changes to opening hours is not the answer to decrease misuse of alcohol in the ACT.

“We thank the ACT Government for taking into consideration the community’s response to the White Paper. We, as an industry, are committed to ensuring a safe and vibrant night life in the ACT, for all to enjoy.”

The AHA will continuing to work with the Government, relevant authorities and key stakeholders to ensure the incidents of misuse of alcohol in the ACT continues to decrease.
