Leading restaurants have joined the movement to help raise money for Australians facing homelessness.
The DineSmart program is now in its 22nd year, and has raised more than $13 million to support individuals, with donations put towards housing, mental health services, food relief, and pathways out of homelessness.
This month, more than 60 restaurants across the country are taking part in the DineSmart campaign, which allows guests to add a $2 donation to their bill.
Venues including Chin Chin, Cafe Sydney, and Lake House Daylesford are celebrating their 10th year participating in the campaign, with 2024 also seeing a number of newcomers such as Yugen, Rumi, Molli, and Yakamoz.
Freddy’s in Melbourne has also come on board for the first time this year, with co-owner Dan Leuzzi keen to raise as much money as possible.
“Having a strong community around us has been instrumental in our growth as a business over the years,” he says. “Giving back is
imperative to keeping that community strong, safe, and filled with a welcome-ness that we feel on a daily basis. At Freddy’s, that’s exactly what motivates us to get out of bed every day.”
It’s a critical time for many Australians, with data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reporting that 300 people are turned away from support due to shortages of staff, shelter, and other resources each day. New Census data shows 122,000 people experience homelessness on any given night.
DineSmart grants equate to more meals cooked, an increase in crisis accommodation, and outreach teams assisting individuals on the street.
The campaign has donated to more than 1,100 local organisations across Australia since its 2003 inception. To find participating restaurants or donate, click here.
