From 1 July 2016 South Australia’s public outdoor dining areas will be smoke-free.
This will mean smoking is banned from outdoor dining areas at pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, and temporary events at all times that food is offered or provided.
The South Australian government’s notice states that an outdoor dining area is an unenclosed public area in which tables, or tables and chairs, are provided for the purpose of public dining in the area. Snack-food, considered to be any pre-packaged food intended to be consumed between meals, is not included in the ban.
Smoking has been banned in enclosed areas across South Australia for over a decade, and the state is the latest to restrict smoking in outdoor dining areas. The first state to impose a ban was Queensland in 2006, while the NSW government introduced a ban in July 2015. Victoria will be the last state to conform, when it implements a ban in August 2017.
