Milan Strbac, operator of Sugarcane in Sydney’s Surry Hills, has confirmed he’ll launch a second site, this time located in the beachside suburb of Coogee.
Occupying the site which previously operated as Nissaki Greek Taverna restaurant on the South Coogee beachfront, the 100 seat bar and restaurant will feature a similar menu to Surry Hills, however it will be larger and have a stronger seafood focus.
Open on Tuesday to Sunday for dinner only, the site will comprise a restaurant dining area, an outdoor cocktail/bar section offering Asian-inspired drinks and a private dining room.
“The area is in need of an upmarket Asian restaurant," Strbac told Hospitality. “There are a couple of decent restaurants offering different styles of food down there at the moment, but nothing similar to my style.”
The Coogee team will include Griff Pamment, who co-owns the Juicy Lucy chicken shop (which opened in February) with Strbac, and Tristan Balian (ex-Mr Wong, Longrain).
“I'll be spending most of my time down at Sugarcane Coogee in the first three to six months of it opening,” Strbac said. “I'm really excited to throw myself into something new, and I also live in the area, so it's going to be great to see how the local community receives it.”
Coogee’s Sugarcane will launch in mid-July.
