A coffee shop in the NSW south coast suburb of Bermagui has been heavily criticised for erecting a sign just before Australia Day which read ‘Yes we’re open on National Dickhead Day.’
The Mister Jones Open Studio and Espresso Bar has since been the subject of numerous complaints and after a picture of the sign was posted on Facebook, it had more than 3,000 shares, 6,700 likes and almost 2,000 comments, SMH reports.
The sign was removed in the afternoon of 25 January.
While most of the shares were from individuals, organisations including Aussies against Islam and Sharia Law and Exposing the Truth about Islam also shared the image.
Bermagui Chamber of Commerce president Keith Dowden said the caf’s owner has a history of being a ‘non-conformist’, and in 2015 the business erected a similar sign which read ‘Strictly no patriotism beyond this point.’
“He [the owner] is entitled to his own views, but he has to realise a lot of people don’t feel the same way as he does,” Dowden said.
