Thai-inspired cold plate ice cream, also known as teppanyaki ice cream has made its way to the streets of Melbourne.
Scroll Ice Cream opened on High Street Windsor on Saturday 5 December specialising in the curious dessert which involves ‘cooking’ homemade ice cream on a large, cool surface (below zero) and mixing in a variety of ingredients. The concoction is then flattened out like a pancake and formed into cold scrolls.
The team at Scroll were inspired to open the dessert bar following a trip to Phuket where they were first exposed to the dish, and have since tested Melbourne's appetite for it via a number of food festivals including Taste of Melbourne.
According to the owners, the quality of the milk and cream used is crucial as it forms the base of the dessert and as such, have chosen to source it from Fitzroy-based St David Dairy.
A number of different flavours are available including the Pav-Lover, a deconstructed pavlova that uses fresh strawberries; and the Nutter Butter Biscuit, which combines chocolate Tim Tams, Nutella and peanut butter. Dairy-free and vegan options are also available.
