One of Sydney’s top sommeliers and wine buyer at Billy Kwong, Sophie Otton, will open a 30-seat wine bar this month, serving up affordable wines and cocktails by a New York mixologist.
Located on King Street in Newtown, She Loves You will take over the former site of Doris and Beryl’s Bridge Club & Tea House, which Otton acquired in March last year.
Moving away from the “serious” wine lists she’s used to, Otton has devised a menu of 20 wines featuring mostly Australian drops with a focus on accessibility, with half of the list available by the glass for no more than $16.
Frederick Stevenson riesling, Ochota Barrels grenache and reds by Patrick Underwood’s Little Reddie are among the wines on the list.
New York mixologist Eben Freeman has created the cocktail list, taking inspiration from current trends in New York and showcasing Australian ingredients.
Drinks include the Dark and Stormy with desert lime and the Red Økar Spritz using Jilly rosé from Clunes, New South Wales.
The menu is kept simple with roasted nuts, cheese and pickles, but guests can bring their own food in from takeaway restaurants in the area.
She Loves You will be popping up at Kylie Kwong’s upcoming Carriageworks Night Market on 9 February, before officially opening its doors by the end of the month.
