The Victorian Government will reveal reopening plans for the state this Sunday.
Premier Daniel Andrews said a ‘traffic light system’ will be used, which will see different industries fall under the following:
- Closed (red)
- Heavily restricted (orange)
- Restricted (yellow)
- Open with a COVID-safe plan (green)
Premier Andrews said industries will move through phases of reopening, but that “everything has to have that asterisk next to it”.
The government will spend the coming week analysing coronavirus data and working with industry leaders to determine appropriate restrictions, which will revolve around six points including creating workforce bubbles, wearing a mask, keeping records of customers and staff and physical distancing.
The introduction of outdoor dining for restaurants, cafes and bars is also a possibility, with Premier Andrews saying the warmer weather has led to further options for venues.
Victoria has been under stage four restrictions since the beginning of August, and hospitality operators are hoping venues will be able to open with at least 20 diners.
Restaurant & Catering Association CEO Wes Lambert says the industry is the “lifeblood of Melbourne” and has called for a measurable roadmap out of the crisis.
“It’s important we work very closely with the state government, the councils as well as every single business to put reasonable health guidelines together that will allow these businesses to operate under the suppression strategy the government has laid out,” Lambert said on 3AW.
Premier Andrews will announce reopening details on Sunday 6 September.
