Taking its name from the Aussie larrikin, Larrie’s is Newcastle’s latest takeaway shop inspired by the nostalgic milk bars of the 70s and 80s.
Larrie’s is located on the ground floor of The Beach Hotel, which was acquired by Glen Piper in May last year.
“It’s an honour to swing open the doors of the first venue of what’s set to be the first chapter in a new era for the Beach Hotel,” says Piper.
“The pub is a place where the community has gathered for generations … [it’s] a nod to the old with a touch of the new – filled with good mates, great food, cold beer and a cracking view of the waves.”
The menu features classic beach snacks starring locally sourced, and sustainably caught seafood.
Some of the highlights include a traditional fish and chips, big chip butty, battered pineapple fritters and even a Gaytime sundae for the sweet tooth.
There are also fresh dining options such as a retro prawn and mango bowl, alongside fresh sashimi sourced from northern New South Wales and crispy fish tacos.
The drinks offering leans into the local focus, with wines from the nearby Hunter Valley and beers from Foghorn, Steel City and the Newcastle-founded Modus.
Nostalgic non-alcoholic tipples including passiona and creaming soda are also on pour.
The interiors of Larrie’s is like a step back in time, with vintage surfboards and photos donated by the Merewether Surfboard Club lining the walls.
The design was in collaboration with local architects EJE Interiors, with the aim of combining Merewether’s surf history with the milk bar feel.
Larrie’s is the first instalment of the revitalised Beach Hotel, with a new-look main bar and dining experience set to open later this year.
Larrie’s is located at The Beach Hotel, 99 Frederick Street, Merewether.
