Sesh Mafia has expanded its footprint in Perth’s CBD with the launch of a new eatery.
Papi Katsu is now open on St Georges Terrace in Brookfield Place with a swish dining room that has space for 120 guests. The restaurant has also been fitted out with three 20-pax private dining spaces and an omakase counter, which is set to launch in the coming months.
It’s the most ambitious project yet for the group, which is led by owners Ben Tua, Leigh Power, and Eoin Kenny.
“Papi Katsu is different from anything we’ve done before,” says Tua. “We’ve all been working together in the industry for decades and are at the point in our careers where we just want to have fun with it.”
“The tongue-in-cheek name, phenomenal menu, cyberpunk-inspired interiors, and
world-class service … we’re trying to create a space where it’s all about having a good time, no matter the occasion.”
Culinary Director Chase Weber has taken the non-traditional route when it comes to the menu, and has worked alongside Chef Leigh Power to iron out the final plates.
Most dishes are designed for sharing, with guests encouraged to kick off their meal with a sashimi plate or prawn katsu sandwich. There’s also local yabbies served with milk bread and a selection of temaki for starters.
Larger options cover miso-glazed toothfish served with a broth of clams, ikura, and roasted fish bones as well as roasted duck breast with mandarin oil and a 1kg A5 Japanese Wagyu steak cooked over charcoal.
Kenny has put together the drinks list which is inspired by Japanese service and ingredients. There are dedicated highball and martini menus as well as a 15-bottle sake list.
Papi Katsu is open for dinner, with lunch service commencing on the 10th of June.
