Sydney institution Freda’s is returning to its original neighbourhood and taking over Lil Sis side bar at The Abercrombie.
Owners Dave Abram and Carla Uriarte have partnered with Solotel on the project, with the goal of harnessing the energy and creativity of the original Chippendale Freda’s through regular club nights.
“It’s remarkable that we’re coming back just a few hundred meters from where the original Freda’s was,” says Abrams.
“That venue had a big impact on the nightlife scene at the time, and with Club Freda’s nights in the works, I’m beyond excited to be back in a position to provide opportunities for young DJs, promoters and creatives in Sydney and help give them a platform to perform and express themselves. At the heart of it, that’s what Freda’s has always been about”.
The Freda’s team will also be taking over creative direction and programming for The Abercrombie.
The duo originally opened Freda’s on Regent Street in Chippendale in 2011, where it operated for nine years as a bar, exhibition space, and live music and performance venue. Taylor Square’s Café Freda’s opened on New Year’s Eve 2020 with a rolling one-year lease. The team recently announced its last service will be held on 1 March during Sydney’s Mardi Gras.
The menu is yet to be announced but according to Abram, “The drinks at Bar Freda’s will continue our tradition of offering fantastic wines from small producers, but we’ll also put a greater focus on cocktails, using quality ingredients but keeping things fun and approachable. We want it to be a space that’s accessible, welcoming, and community minded”.
Bar Freda’s is set to open in April.
