Michelin has unveiled the 2017 edition of its Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau, featuring a total of 80 starred restaurants.
The guide features a total of 238 restaurants, 80 of which earned stars – 61 in Hong Kong and 19 Macau – along with 75 Bib Gourmand-rated eateries (recognised for their high quality, affordable offering).
In summary, the 2017 edition includes:
- Eight three star restaurants, including six in Hong Kong and two in Macau
- 19 two star restaurants, including 14 in Hong Kong and five in Macau
- 52 one star restaurants, including 41 in Hong Kong and 12 in Macau
- 75 Bib Gourmand restaurants, including 63 in Hong Kong and 12 in Macau
Of the starred restaurants, nine in Hong Kong are enjoying the status for the first time, and three in Macau.
Kashiwaya in Central, Hong Kong, was presented with two stars exactly a year after its November 2015 opening. The Japanese kaiseki restaurant is the first overseas outpost of Japanese chef Hideaki Matsuo, who also owns three Michelin-starred Kashiwaya in Osaka.
Also making its debut in the two-star category – after being presented with one star in the 2016 edition – is Ta Vie, helmed by Japanese chef Hideaki Sato, who fuses Japanese and French techniques.
Over in Macau, two restaurants, Chinese eatery Feng Wei Ju and Japanese restaurant Mizumi, also jumped from one to two stars. Feng Wei Ju specialises in Chuan-Xiang cuisine, a spice-heavy cuisine from the regions of Sichuan and Hunan and one of the eight major cuisines of China, while Mizumi is helmed by three renowned Japanese chefs and flies in fresh produce from Japan daily.
“The Hong Kong market has stabilised, gained in quality, and maintained a very rich offering with 49 different cuisines listed in the guide this year. Meanwhile, over the past three years our inspectors have noted a real development in Japanese cuisine, with more and more Japanese chefs deciding to open branches of existing Japanese gastronomic establishments” said Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guides.
“This phenomenon is reflected in the 2017 selection of the Michelin Guide, with two stars awarded to the Hong Kong branch of Kashiwaya, a restaurant from Osaka, and one star awarded each to Sushi Wadatsumi and Sushi Tokami, two establishments from Tokyo with second addresses in Hong Kong.”
Other newly starred restaurants include:
- pure, a contemporary French restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Harbour City mall
- VEA, a private kitchen-turned-restaurant by young chef Vicky Cheng and Antonio Lai
- IM Teppanyaki & Wine
Michelin also awarded its first stars to Cantonese restaurants Yat Tung Heen and Spring Moon in the Peninsula Hotel, the latter being one of the city’s oldest dining establishments dating back to 1928. One star also went to global steakhouse chain Beefbar, which opened in early 2016.
In Macau, three Cantonese restaurants, Lai Heen, Ying and Pearl Dragon earned one star for the first time.
