Melbourne restaurateur Andrew McConnell is preparing for yet another opening – this time a wine bar called Marion, located next door to Cutler & Co.
Opening on 23 October at 51-53 Gertrude Street, Marion will offer guests at Cutler & Co, also operated by McConnell, somewhere to enjoy a drink and a snack before or after their meal, while also being a destination in its own right.
The kitchen and bar will be open throughout the day until late in the evening, and will also serve brunch from 8am. Cutler & Co sous chef Allan Eccles will head up the open kitchen at Marion, where dishes will be designed for flexible dining, and will range from smaller morsels to larger items to share.
Front of house will be led by Andrew Joy, who’s worked with McConnell for almost 10 years, including four at Cumulus Inc. Liam O’Brien, Cutler & Co’s sommelier, will put together an extensive wine list including back vintages and older wines from the shared cellar. Wines will also be available to take-away.
It's been a busy month for McConnell, who together with butcher Troy Wheeler have collaborated to create Meatsmith, targeting both consumers and the restaurant industry.
The retail offering at Meatsmith will include a range of cooked and cured meats, artisanal smallgoods and charcuterie. Meatsmith will also house a food store for quality larder items like premium oils, salts, spices and house-made sauces. The lamb shoulder made famous at Cumulus Inc will also be available, along with parfait, foie gras, pickles and a selection of boutique wines.
