While the caf owners at The Food Republic in Melbourne’s east have blamed bad eggs for a salmonella outbreak, the Department of Health claims the cause is unknown.
According to the ABC, customers of the Blackburn cafe fell ill last month, and several were hospitalised.
Department of Health spokesman Bram Alexander said a lab test confirmed 23 of 25 people who reported being ill were found to have contracted salmonella.
"We haven't found that this has related to food," he said.
"We know in the past raw eggs are linked [to salmonella] … until we get test results it's a bit hard to implicate a particular food."
Alexander said The Food Republic has been thoroughly cleaned and there have been no other cases reported since the 18 March incident.
