The former operator of Gold Coast restaurant Sogongdong Tofu House has been penalised for underpaying staff.
Fair Work Omudsman inspectors issued a compliance notice to Seouk Woong Hong in May 2020 after finding three workers had not been paid properly.
The notice required Woong Hong to rectify the underpayments, however he failed to comply.
The Federal circuit court imposed a penalty of $3,396.60 against Woong Hong, with the court allowing the penalty to be paid to the three workers to partially rectify their underpayments.
“When compliance motices are not followed, we are prepared to take legal action to ensure workers receive their lawful entitlements,” said Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Michael Campbell.
“Improving compliance in the restaurant, café and fast food sector will remain a key priority for the Fair Work Ombudsman throughout 2021-22.”
