Seafood restaurant Mures Tasmania has appointed Markella Koutalidi as head chef of Mures Upper Deck.
Koutalidi will take over the position from Eugene Burgo, who is returning to his home state of Victoria after successfully leading the Upper Deck kitchen for many years.
Originally from Greece, Koutalidi brings over 10 years of culinary experience to the role from around the world. Her previous experience includes stints at Gordon Ramsay’s Pétrus in England, Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, also in England, and Spondi restaurant in Greece.
Most recently, Koutalidi served as the senior sous chef at The Source Restaurant – MONA, where she developed a strong foundation of the local and seasonal ingredients.
Koutalidi says she is looking forward to further exploring her creativity in seafood,
“I love cooking with fresh ingredients and the seafood that is available all year round here in Tasmania is amongst the best in the world,” she says.
Director Will Mure welcomed the new head chef and thanked Burgo for his dedication to Mures.
“Markella is talented with years of experience and a great appreciation of what it takes to deliver excellence to our guests,” he says. “I know she will continue to build on the strong foundation that has been set by Eugene.”
