Nahji Chu’s latest venture, Cha Li Boi, has closed after just a few months of operation.
The restaurant was Chu’s first since the collapse of her business MissChu in 2014.
According to Good Food, Chu split with the investors behind the venue in late July, telling the Fairfax publication her work at Cha Li Boi was “done.”
“They didn’t tell me they were going to close it, but they’ve told me they’ll pay any debts. I’m not sure what they are going to do with the space next,” Chu tells Good Food.
The 750sqm reimagined Yum Cha hall opened on 9 May above the East Leagues Club in Bondi Junction. The menu — designed by dumpling chef John Leong (ex-Billy Kwong) — championed novelty creations like pacman dumplings and clawback dumplings, featuring steamed king crab legs with claws exposed. And, in collaboration with Chui Lee Luk, Chu designed certified gluten free skins and dumplings featuring native ingredients including karkalla, saltwort and warrigal greens.
