Owner and operator of Kirribilli’s Garfish restaurant Mark Scanlan has been announced as the national president of Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) following the association’s recent AGM.
Scanlan, who owns three restaurants across Sydney’s north shore, has been a member with R&CA for more than 15 years, and has served as state council chair since its inception 12 years ago.
R&CA CEO John Hart said he welcomes the appointment of Scanlan and thanks outgoing president Matteo Pignatelli for his stewardship throughout his presidency.
“Matteo is a charismatic leader passionate about our sector. He was a huge advocate for upskilling the sector and encouraging the next generation of restaurateurs to the forefront. I thank Matteo for his ongoing dedication to our industry,” said Hart.
“Mark has his ear to the ground and listens to the concerns of his peers. He is constantly searching for ways to make doing business easier. He is an appropriate candidate to guide us through the next chapter of the association’s history.”
Scanlan will serve as national president as R&CA becomes a federated body with all state councils now officially members of the national association. Scanlan said he is excited by the opportunity but recognises the enormity of the task ahead.
“The industry is facing some big challenges. Lack of staff, rising wage bills and increased red tape makes it difficult to operate. I hope I can bring a new perspective on how best to help small business,” he said.
