Chefs around the country have payed tribute chef Darren Simpson after news of his death broke. Despite speculation he suffered a heart attack, the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
After being named Young Chef of the Year at just 21, Irish-born Simpson worked at a number of high-profile restaurants, including Paul Rankin’s Roscoff in Ireland and Albert Roux’s Le Gavroche in London, both Michelin-starred.
Simpson then made a name in Australia’s hospitality industry as head chef of Aqua Luna Bar and Restaurant, with critic Terry Durack saying “Darren changed the look and feel of our contemporary Italian menus almost overnight”.
He later found fame as a celebrity on Australian television shows, including Ready Steady Cook and My Restaurant Rules.
Simpson is survived by wife Julie and sons Angus, 14, and Hamish, 12.
