The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2023 have been announced at a live ceremony in Valencia, Spain.
Central in Peru snagged the no.1 position after coming second last year, with the win a personal victory for husband and wife team Virgilio Martinez and Pia Leon.
“Virgilio Martinez, Pía León, and the whole Central team have truly paved the way in celebrating indigenous ingredients through their innovative dishes and warm hospitality,” says William Drew, director of content for World’s 50 Best.
“Their commitment to research, respect for their country’s heritage and promotion of Peru’s unique biodiversity is unmatched.”
Disfrutar in Barcelona has been awarded the no.2 position followed by Diverxo in Madrid, Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, and Alchemist in Copenhagen.
There are no Australian restaurants featured in the top 50 this year, nor the extended 51-100 list.
South America had the largest number of restaurants listed with a total of nine followed by Asia with seven, and two new entries from Dubai.
Fine diners from 24 territories in five continents have been celebrated this year, with 12 first-timers making the cut.
The World’s Best Pastry Chef award has been won by Pia Salazar from Nuema, with Miguel Angel Millan from Diverxo (no.3) named the World’s Best Sommelier.
Fyn in Cape Town is the most Sustainable Restaurant, with Table by Bruno Verjus in Paris receiving the Highest New Entry Award and Atomix in New York the Highest Climber, which ascended 25 places to no.8 thi syear.
Alchemist in Copenhagen was awarded the Art of Hospitality award, with Julien Royer from Odette in Singapore receiving Chefs’ Choice.
