One of Sydney’s oldest restaurants The Malaya will move to a new location this autumn after 23 years at King Street Wharf.
The iconic wharf was not original location of the restaurant, in fact, it first opened its doors to the public in 1963 at 787 George Street, the same street it will return to this autumn.
The Malaya has snapped up the former Rosetta location at Grosvenor Place, which spans two levels and 180 seats.
The classic Malaysian, Nonya, and Indonesian dishes the restaurant has become known for aren’t going anywhere, but the culinary team will be making slight tweaks for its new digs.
“Our move to Grosvenor Place is not abut reinventing our menu, which we have always seen as the key to our longevity,” says Duan Wong, co-owner. “All the favourites like our laksa and otak otak will be there [as well as] a few new dishes and some amazing live seafood options.”
The Malaya is a family-run restaurant that has been in business for more than 60 years. Wong Tai See first opened the eatery in Sydney, which saw Sydneysiders introduced to flavours and dishes that were unfamiliar to many guests at the time.
Second-generation owners Lance and Givie Wong continued on the legacy, which is now being carried on by their children Duan and Isabella, who are ushering the venue into its next chapter.
The Malaya will hold its final service at King Street Wharf on 29 March before opening at Grosvenor Place in April.
