Vegan eatery Soul Burger has opened its fourth store, bringing its plant-based “chicken” and “beef” burgers to Newtown in Sydney.
Owner Amit Tewari told Broadsheet he’d been looking for a new location for some time.
“Newtown seems to be a cultural birthplace for vegan and vegetarian food, so it was always a matter of when and not if,” he says.
The King Street store joins Soul Burger’s existing stores in Glebe, Parramatta and Randwick.
After a soft opening in late March, the burger bar is now serving up its signature vegan burgers, which bear names like battered fish, pulled pork, southern fried-chicken and chilli beef, despite containing no animal products at all.
The menu also includes plant-based gelato with all profits from each gelato sold going to Soul Burger’s chosen charity.
Tewari told Broadsheet plant-based meat is the future.
“The perspective we take is that there is more than one way to produce meat,” he says. “We use manufacturers that emulate the fibre and structure of regular mince to create a healthier, tastier version,” he says.
