Vidal Legacy Hawkes Bay Chardonnay from the stellar 2016 vintage has now been released.
Crafted by winemaker Hugh Crichton, its complex and flinty notes have become the signature style of the flagship wine.
Legacy’s quality begins with the selection of varietals and we only select grape varieties that excel in Hawkes Bay’s conditions. Vidal Legacy Syrah 2013, grown in the esteemed Gimblett Gravels, is also now available.
“Our approach is simple, there’s nothing new here — it’s based on tradition,” says Crichton. “Our grapes are handpicked, naturally fermented and carefully aged in quality French oak barrels. The quality lies in the vineyard and for us. It’s about capturing that quality because the real magic occurs between the soils, the climate and the people who grow; the viticulturist.”
Previous accolades of earlier vintages include: 2012 vintage awarded International Chardonnay Trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards and Champion Wine of Show at the Bragato Wine Awards; 2013 vintage awarded Air New Zealand Champion Wine of the Show and Champion Chardonnay Trophy at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards; 2014 vintage awarded a trophy at the Sydney International Wine Competition and 2015 awarded the Platinum Best in Category – Best New Zealand Chardonnay at the Decanter World Wine Awards and featured on the Fine Wines of New Zealand list for 2017.
